Case Study
Our role was for Building Surveying, Lead and Principal Designer; Cost Management and Contract Administration, for an ambitious internal refurbishment and restoration project to repurpose an existing chapel to the Grade IIListed John Foster Building as a new lecture theatre.
Investigation works included a comprehensive Building Condition survey and detailed assessment of the listed chapel and ‘Moot room’.
We organised and oversaw the sensitive uncovering and repair of marble stonework, altar features and stone repairs, whilst merging these existing features into current compliance such as glazed fire compartmentation and the provision of new floor finishes.
Measurement and photographic recording of internal listed features included decorative plasterwork, marble walls, pulpit, and timber wall cladding.
We were required to design and specify sympathetic repair works, design a fire-resistant glazed entrance lobby, new building services and specialist lighting works.
The new Lecture Theatre is a genuinely transformational space bringing the University’s Student experience in line with their competitors and is now included onCampus tours and for external events.
We worked closely with the University’s School of Law due to historical significance of ‘Moot’ room for debating
Business Continuity was unaffected during the project with key works carried out during summer recess
A ‘soft landings’ approach was adopted with relevant Health & Safety File including Operation and Maintenance information provided by the Contractor on a rolling programme throughout the project to ensure completeness at Handover
